Redevelopment Work Underway

"The crane is in place and work is underway on 16 new homes for rent at Accent Foundation and Strategic Team Group's development at St Catherine's in Manningham.
Planning permission has been granted to turn St Catherine’s into a mix of two, three and four bedroom houses and two, three and four bedroom apartments. The association is working with Strategic Team Group to develop the homes, which have been part funded by the Homes and Communities Agency, (the government’s national regeneration agency for England), English Heritage and Bradford MDC.

“We are delighted to be working with Accent Foundation on the project at St Catherine’s which will help revitalise the area. The development combines the sensitive regeneration of an historic building with the provision of much-needed quality, affordable, family homes for the local community.”

Manningham Investment

One of the refurbished family homes
  in Manningham
Accent Foundation has spent over £7m in three years renovating over 150 homes in the Manningham area of Bradford.

Most of the homes are old historical Victorian houses which were converted into one and two bedroom flats in the 1980s to meet the needs of the local community at the time.

As Accent planned its refurbishment, the association took into account how the local community had changed since the 1980s, and identified the need to provide good quality family housing.

Phase one of the refurbishment by Seddon Construction started in May 2011 and was completed in June 2012. Most of the work in this phase was carried out  on 59 homes in the Blenheim Road area.

30 homes were refurbished as flats and 29 flats were changed into nine large family houses and two maisonettes.

In addition to de-conversions, the refurbishment also includes the installation of new doors and windows, replacement kitchens and bathrooms, electrical upgrading and new heating systems. Every home is also being re-roofed and insulated.

Phase II of Accent’s investment, which is to de-convert approximately 11 homes at a cost of £2.5M is ongoing and due to compete in June 2013.

History

St Catherines, St Marys Road, Manningham, Bradford, BD8.

Built in 1898 by Architect James Ledingham (1840-1926). The building was known as St Catherines Home for Cancer and the Incurables. It was used as a hospice for women in their last stages of cancer and other incurable diseases.
Joseph Cawthra established the textile company J Cawthra and Co Ltd. He built Perseverance Mill at Dudley Hill in Bradford that employed over 600 workers and he was noted progressive employment policies. He lost his only son and heir to cancer in 1888 and shortly afterwards he funded the establishment of what must have been one of the first Hospices in Bradford.
‘To the glory of God and in memory of their son John William. This building is erected by Joseph and Mary Cawthra of Horton Hall Bradford and presented by them to the trustees of St Catherines Home’
